Located in the center of the Village's historic district, the one-half acre triangular site is the oldest park acquired from the Village in 1925. The ornamental gardens surround war memorials with picnic areas for neighbors to enjoy. The annual Memorial Day parade ends at this site.
Some background facts on the Arlington Heights Memorial Park:
In 1883, Dr John Best, an Arlington Heights resident, donated land to the Village of Arlington Heights for a Soldiers Memorial. (Village of Arlington Heights was incorporated in 1887).
It was called "Monument Park" in reference to the Civil War and WWI monuments.
By the 1920's, both Civil War and WWI Monuments were placed in the Park.
The Park District was founded by the voters on June 9, 1925 and the Village donated what was then called Monument Park soon thereafter.
Throughout its history, Park monuments have come through direct fundraising by citizens and civic groups like the Lions, VFW, American Legion, etc.
The Park was last updated/redesigned in 1969.
Since then, monuments added to the Park include: Vietnam; Panama/Granada; Gulf War 1
Nothing done to the Park design in the ensuing 40 years other than routine maintenance.
In November 2006, the Arlinton Heights Park Foundation began working with a committee of Arlington Heights citizens and veterans to develop a new design for the Park and then raise the funds to construct it.
The Committee to Revive Memorial Park has been instrumental in developing the new design for the Park. Their goal was to provide a place to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans and their families.
Donations from individuals, businesses, and governmental agencies have totaled more than $160,000. This made Phase I redevelopment possible.
As part of the redesign, the original monuments and plaques have been preserved and/or resorted at the West end of the Park.
In 2008, the Park turned 125 years old.
Ground breaking for Phase I redevelopment was on Memorial Day 2008.
Phase I construction was completed with the raising of the US Flag on November 8, 2008
Phase II of the Park Redesign is to raise funds for three enhancements:
- Park lightning
- a Timeline of Conflicts that Arlington Heights Veterans participated in
- a sculpture to be placed at the center of the Star.
