Local Author, Michael Bellito, Gives Glimpse of a Bygone Era
Join local author Michael Bellito as his shares excerpts from his first novel, Ten Again. In his book, writer Michael J. Bellito writes an endearing and poignant story of a young man’s coming of age in the 1960s.

The program and exhibit reception will take place on Tuesday, March 9 from 6:30-8:00pm at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum located at 110 W. Fremont St in Arlington Heights. Visit the current Heritage Gallery exhibit, "Gone, But not Forgotten: Lost Arlington Heights", too. The community is invited to attend this free program.

Looking back on his final year of elementary school, Michael reflects on the many challenges that confronted him like dealing with the opposite sex and looking ahead with fear to junior high, and he remembers a time in his life when baseball, movies, fall and winter breaks, summer vacation and swimming with his friends filled his life.

Michael grew up in a Northwest suburb of Chicago which could have been very much like Arlington Heights. There he spent time at the movie theater, visiting Riverview, and watching Bozo Buckets. In Ten Again, he presents a snapshot of a bygone era that allowed kids to be kids - and having the time of their lives.

Michael Bellito taught Speech and English, including creative writing classes, at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois, for thirty-two years. Mr. Bellito has published a short story, "Waiting for a Pennant", about his grandfather in a Chicago area magazine. He currently teaches at Harper Community College and coaches individual speech events at John Hersey High School. He is currently writing his second novel set in the 1960s. He has two children and is grandfather to twin boys. He lives with his wife of 32 years, Joani, in Illinois. His book will be available for purchase following the program. eloquentbooks.com/TenAgain For questions, please call, 847.255.1225.

Gone but Not Forgotten: Lost Arlington Heights

The past is never lost – as long as someone remembers it.

Throughout our community’s history many businesses, homes, schools, and other public spaces have been razed, or become victims of age. Our sense of community is often tied to these locations, which now reside only in our memories. Every now and then it is important to revisit these places in order to help us understand where we are today. Progress has changed Arlington Heights since it was first called Dunton in 1854, and progress will continue to shape the future of our community.

Photographs and artifacts relating to the village’s past will be the subject of the Arlington Heights Historical Museum’s exhibit Gone but Not Forgotten: Lost Arlington Heights. Generously sponsored by the Arlington Heights Junior Woman’s Club and the Estate of Dorothy M. Sieburg, the exhibition can be viewed in the Heritage Gallery from February 13 through May 23, 2010.

The Heritage Gallery and Shop is located on the Arlington Heights Historical Museum Campus at 112 West Fremont Street. The Gallery specializes in local history exhibits drawn from the Historical Society’s collections and local, national and regional traveling exhibitions that explore the broader context of our history. The Heritage Shop offers a selection of historical toys and books, along with local history memorabilia. Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. There is no admission fee for the Gallery, but a suggested donation of $2.00 is recommended.

For more information about Arlington Artists on Display contact the museum at 847.255.1225, or visit the museum’s website: ahmuseum.org.
