Arlington Heights Park District Turns 90
Towards the end of the 19th century, local townspeople began protesting the unsightly conditions of the land alongside the railroad tracks in the newly incorporated Arlington Heights. The Railroad had developed several parks on the north and south sides of the railroad right of way. These "railroad parks" were the beginning of the park system in Arlington Heights. In 1925, citizens determined, by petition, that there was a need for an organized park district and that future development of the community demanded such an organization. On June 9, 1925, the Arlington Heights Park District was formed and the first Park District meeting was held June 18, 1925, with Commissioners Nathaniel Banta, Henry Klehm, Eugene Berbecker, Albert Volz, and Julius D. Flentie. The rest, as they say, is history.
Looking Toward the Next 90 Years
We have been fortunate to be part of such a great community and to have had the opportunity to provide recreation services to so many generations of families. We also know that we couldn’t have accomplished what we have without our dedicated employees and the numerous community partners that have been part of our history over the years.
As the needs of our residents have changed so has the Park District. For example, the days of using the gymnasium at Recreation Park as a roller skating rink are long gone. Today, we handle larger and more complex recreation programs than were ever dreamed of in our earliest years. And, today our newest gymnasiums incorporate a variety of strategies to conserve energy, reduce heating/cooling loads, and that lessen the impact on the environment. Indeed, our customer’s needs have evolved and we remain committed to continually evolving with their needs to offer new programs and services to keep future generations healthy and happy. The next 90 years will bring more change but all of us at the Arlington Heights Park District are looking forward to a bright future emanating from 410 N. Arlington Heights Road.
A Year of Celebration
The celebration of our 90th anniversary is an excellent time to highlight the impact our programs and services have made on the community and in the lives of participants over the years. A year of celebration will begin at this year’s Picnic in the Park event on June 5th.
You’ll be invited to share your favorite park district memories in an effort to collect, preserve and make available to the community a digital collection of memories made in our programs, parks and playgrounds. We hope you and your family will join in the fun surrounding this important milestone. A retrospective video is posted on ahpd.org
