RENOVATION & EXPANSION - REOPENING 2020

The Park Board of Commissioners broke ground on this exciting project on Tuesday, August 28th, 2018. We look forward to opening the doors and sharing it with the public in early 2020.

» See FAQs below

New Look Coming in 2020

Project Updates:

1/28/19 The snow and extreme temperatures hampered work this week.  Approximately half of the roof joists in the new double-gymnasium has been installed, and cold form framing work on first and second floors of the west side of the building continued. Work is expected to resume on Monday, February 4th.
1/18/19 Progress continues at the corner of Ridge and Euclid Avenues with the installation of the roof decking.  This entails steel sheeting being placed on the top of the roof joists.  The cold form framing uses steel studs rather than wood studs for the framing out of the walls.  Things are truly starting to shape up at the new recreation center.
12/28/18 Construction of the new recreation center continues. Photos above show the northeast stairwell that exits from the suspended walking track, and a section of hollow core planking being lifted from the truck to set on the steel structural supports. Hollow core is being used as the second floor decking. In early January 2019, you'll start to see roof trusses arrive for the fitness area and gymnasium. Installation of steel decking will begin once the steel roof trusses are in place.
11/29/18

Significant progress has been made over the past few weeks on the new recreation center at the corner of Euclid and Ridge. The parking lot has been completed allowing for crews to begin tilting and lifting into place, 9 precast concrete panels this week. Each panel weighs between 30,000 and 40,000 pounds.

10/13/18

A small segment of footings and foundation were completed on the east side of the gymnasium. The footings and piers on the west side of the facility have all been back filled with stone to grade and have been compacted. The limestone that frames the pool windows on the west side of the facility was removed in preparation for precast panels.

09/21/2018

Trenching for the footings and foundation continues. A good portion of the footing work that has been completed is ready for forms to pour the foundation wall. The wellness pool foundation walls were poured, as were the deep piers near the west wall of the facility.

09/14/2018 Crews have been busy excavating in preparation for the foundation and footings for the new building. Weather permitting, work will continue on the foundation over the next 3-4 weeks.
08/28/2018
The Park District officially breaks ground on the expansion of the Olympic Indoor Swim Center expected to be completed in Spring 2020.
07/13/2018
At the June 28, 2018 meeting, the Park Board of Commissioners voted to proceed with what will be the second major renovation of the Olympic Indoor Swim Center since opening its doors in 1970. This project will evolve the predominantly aquatics heavy facility into that of a multi-faceted, recreation center in direct response to residents’ needs.
April 2018
Over the past year, the Park Board and staff  have been preparing for a proposed renovation to transform Olympic Indoor Swim Center into a one-stop recreation center to benefit the community’s health and wellness for generations to come. Though we were prepared for some variability in programming ability during the project, we are pleased to report that the proposed renovation will not significantly impact Summer 2018 activities. Some recreation programs, such as Safety Town, and Swim and Tennis Camps are temporarily relocating to other park district facilities but you will be able to use your Splash Pass and participate in open swim, swim lessons and other activities this Summer at Olympic.

The District will work hard to minimize the inconvenience this renovation may bring to its patrons.  If possible, construction will be staged to keep portions of the facility open throughout the project.  If all goes according to plan, the new and improved facility will have a grand reopening in early 2020.

UPDATED 8.31.18 Project Scope:

What Improvements are Coming?

Construction of a new, approximately 53,000 sq.ft., addition to the existing building began in August 2018.  With the addition of the new building, the total square footage of the new recreation center will be approximately 99,000 sq.ft.  Additional maintenance needs of the existing facility will also be addressed. . The entire project is being financed through a combination of fund balance and the District’s bonding capabilities.

How will patrons be impacted during this project?

Initially the facility will remain open as site work is completed on the surrounding grounds and new portions of the facility. Intermittent closures of the facility may need to occur from time to time, but will be communicated in advance of any closure. The facility will close to the public in March of 2019 at the end of the swim team season and remain closed until the grand reopening to accomplish all remaining interior work in the existing and new buildings.

Olympic Project Questions

Questions & Answers

Why is the park district renovating and expanding the Olympic Indoor Swim Center?

A few years back, the Board of Commissioners identified the swim center as a facility that had the potential to best benefit the community if it were to be renovated. In September of 2017, the park district completed a random and statistically valid needs assessment in the community. In response to the survey, residents expressed the need for additional indoor walking space, opportunities for active aging adults, an exercise facility, indoor gym space, and an indoor wellness pool. The Olympic facility was also identified as the park district center that should receive the most attention in the next three years, validating the Commissioners initial discussions on the possibility of renovating the facility

Were residents provided an opportunity to share their thoughts on the project?

Yes, residents were invited to attend three open houses held in early December 2017.  All resident feedback from the open houses was shared with the Board of Commissioners.  Residents have also had the opportunity to attend Park District Board meetings to share their thoughts directly with the Board of Commissioners.  In addition, the park district appeared before the Village of Arlington Heights Design and Plan Commissions and the Village Board, each meeting offering an opportunity for public comment

Did the park district consider how the expansion may impact local traffic patterns?

Yes, an independent traffic study was completed.  The study suggests that current road infrastructure should be sufficient to handle the increased traffic as a result of the improvements.  Ingress and egress from the site will be improved with the new entrance to the north of the building.  Staff from the park district and Village of Arlington Heights will monitor the traffic patterns and plan for future traffic improvements if necessary

How much parking will be available to support the increased capacity of the facility?

The number of parking spaces will increase from the 191 presently available to 274 spaces.

Can I view the bid results for the project?

Yes, the bid results are posted on our website at the following link:   www.ahpd.org/capital-improvements/rfps-and-bids/

Did the Park District Board of Commissioners establish a project budget?

Yes, a project budget of $16,000,000 was set for the new construction and a budget of $1,000,000 to address the maintenance needs of the existing facility.

What improvements are going to be completed at the Olympic Indoor Swim Center?

The following amenities will be available at the completion of the project:

  • Two gymnasiums for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball
  • A suspended walking track above the gymnasiums

  • An enlarged pool party room
  • A new playground
  • An opportunity for outside basketball at the south parking lot
  • Improvements to existing interior lighting and mechanicals
  • Updated site landscaping

To complete the improvements, will any existing amenities be removed from the park site?

Yes, the improvements require the removal of the skate park, existing playground, and tennis courts.

  • Park district staff is investigating alternative park sites that might be best suited to install a skate park.  Please keep an eye out for future communications on the proposed development

  • A new playground will be constructed to the west of the new gymnasium.

  • Although the existing basketball court will be removed, an opportunity to play outside basketball will be provided off of the south parking lot

  • At this time, the tennis courts are not proposed for replacement and no changes will occur to safety town.  Nearby opportunities to play tennis are still available at Hasbrook, Volz, and Recreation Parks.  Please check our website for other tennis locations

Will the facility require closure during construction?

Yes.  Initially the facility will remain open as site work begins on the surrounding grounds and new portions of the facility.  Intermittent closures to the facility may need to occur from time to time, but will be communicated in advance of any closure.  The facility will close to the public in March of 2019 at the end of the swim team season and remain closed until the grand reopening to accomplish all remaining interior work in the existing and new buildings.
