Celebrate Park and Recreation Month: AHPD Gives you 31 Ways to Rock Your Park

31 Ways to “Rock Your Park” in Arlington Heights this July

Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. The National Park and Recreation Association (NRPA) has named this year’s theme “Rock Your Park.”
The Arlington Heights Park District has developed a list of 31 Ways to Rock Your Park and encourages participants to take photos and submit them to the Arlington Heights Park District Facebook fan page. Learn more about NRPA, visit their website.
  1. Play at Recreation Park- Visit the playground at Recreation Park and enjoy the newest playground equipment Arlington Heights has to offer.
  2. See a free concert- Arlington Heights has eight free concerts in the park during July. The bands playing range from children friendly rock music to the AH Community Concert Band. There is a concert for everyone in the entire family during the month.
  3. Go swimming at one of 6 pools- No matter where you live in Arlington Heights there is a pool nearby. Cool off on a hot summer day at one of the pools.
  4. Watch a game of baseball- Take in some of America’s Pastime in its purest form at one of our many baseball and softball fields around Arlington Heights.
  5. Golfing- Hit the links at one of our 3 different golf facilities. Take a lesson, play eighteen or just hit a few at the range.
  6. Fitness Club- Be on the lookout for the all new fitness equipment going into Forest View Racquet and Fitness Club.
  7. Historical Museum- Learn a bit about your hometown or take a class and learn something new about yourself at the Historical Museum. Volunteers are always encouraged if you’re interested.
  8. Take a Veteran to Memorial Park- Take a family member, friend or loved one to Memorial Park for to thank them for their service and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Bring a picnic basket or just sit and enjoy the ever-changing and now modernly updated Memorial Park.
  9. Skate Park- The skate park is located at Olympic Indoor Pool at 660 N Ridge Ave. Even if you don’t skate come check these daredevils out.
  10. Tennis under the lights - Go over to Forest View Racquet and Fitness Club and play under the lights in one of the 5 courts that have outdoor lighting.
  11. Swing on the swings- Everyone has their favorite swing at their favorite park. Go to that swing and swing like a kid again. Unless you are a kid and then just swing!
  12. Senior Center- Go to the senior center and enjoy a day of activities, classes or trips.
  13. Volunteer- With 59 parks and 715 acres, the Park District would not be able to maintain its’ reputation without the help of the community. Contact Arlington Heights Park District to find out the opportunities and how you can help.
  14. Picnic-Grab a blanket and some lunch and enjoy a picnic on a beautiful summer day in the shade at one of our wonderful parks.
  15. “Rock the Park”- Can’t make it to one of the concerts? Bring an acoustic guitar or just your voice and make your own music in one of our parks!
  16. Lake Arlington- There is a number of fun activities at Lake Arlington both on the lake and around the lake. Take a walk or jog around the path. Rent a paddle boat. Take a sailing class. Go canoeing or kayaking. Or just sit on one of the benches and enjoy the scenery.
  17. Nature walk at Kingsbridge Arboretum- Take a walk through the 5.2 acre open space and enjoy the variety of trees and wildlife at Kingsbridge Arboretum.
  18. Shoot Hoops- Go ‘Be Like Mike’ at one of the Park District’s many basketball courts. Indoor or outdoor courts are located all over town. Indoor or outdoor courts are located close to your home. Open Gym Hours are available for indoor courts as well.
  19. Sand Volleyball- Don’t go all the way to Lake Michigan to play sand volleyball. Arlington Heights has six sand volleyball courts with one no more than a few minutes away from your house.
  20. Don’t ‘Rock’ the boat- Rent a paddle boat at Lake Arlington. But remember “Rock Your Park” not the boat.
  21. Historical Museum Gallery- Arlington Heights has a wealth of history and much of it is collected at the Historical Museum. There are a number of classes and programs that go on at the Museum all the time. This summer the gallery is, “Storytelling through the Mail: Tall Tale Postcards” and will be available all of July and throughout the summer.
  22. Fishing Derby- This is probably the earliest anyone will be rocking the park this July. The Family Fishing Derby is July 16th from 7-9 am and is a great way to bond with the family. Please register early.
  23. Irish Fest- Come celebrate Irish heritage at the 12th Annual Irish Fest on July 15th and 16th. Music, food, vendors and a variety of entertainment will be fun for everyone.
  24. Nominate a class employee- Arlington Heights Park District has a bunch of great employees. If you see one that has treated you extra special or went the extra mile at their job, nominate them as a CLASS employee.
  25. Visit the Natural Growth Areas- One of Arlington Heights Park District’s efforts is to maintain environmental sustainability. Ten natural growth, low-mow areas have been established to lessen the footprint the park district makes on earth. Visit these parks and appreciate the natural beauty.
  26. Diving Show at Frontier Park- Come out and watch the instructor staff from Heritage and Frontier put on a diving show on July 15th at 6:15 pm. The only cost is the admission to the pool. If you have a pool pass it’s free.
  27. Kayak Demo Days- Come by Lake Arlington on July 9th from 10-4 pm to check out the Northwest Passage of Wilmette’s fleet of kayaks.
  28. Night Golf- Throughout the summer there are four nights of Night Golf. One of them is July 22nd. Come on out to hit special glow in the dark golf balls. Bring a flashlight and have the time of your life.
  29. Roller Hockey- Bring your skates and equipment to either of the Park District’s two free roller hockey courts. Located at Carefree Park and Greenbrier Park. Both courts come with nets and hockey markings. Check out the facility locator to visit the court closest to your house.
  30. Go to your favorite playground- There are playgrounds all over the district. Go to your favorite one and do your favorite playground activity.
  31. Lie down and watch the clouds- One of the best ways to rock your park is just to lay on the grass and watch the clouds. Bring a friend or go by yourself and enjoy a peaceful day in the park.
