ComEd Green Region Grant:
Lake Arlington 2018/2019

As part of the grant program is ComEd’s  endorsement for the deliberate planning for open space protection and promoting the rich diversity of landscapes in our area that include native prairies; wetlands; woodlands; and protection of our network of streams and rivers.

The special focus for the 2018 grant was Pollinator Protection.
ComEd has committed support to municipalities; townships; counties; park districts; conservation and forest preserve districts in northern Illinois in the form of funding for some expenses toward creating or enhancing pollinator habits.

Arlington Heights Park District applied for and received a $10,000 matching grant for the development and installation of an approximately 18,000 sq.ft. pollinator habitat on the north side of Lake Arlington adjacent to the ComEd power easement.

The Park District has contracted the services of Pizzo and Associates, a well-known ecological restoration company to help design, and install the plant material needed, along with the EnviroGroup’s team of volunteers.  Pizzo will be preparing the site beginning August 29th by eliminating existing vegetation and invasive species in the designated area, in order to prepare the area for the installation of native seed and plugs this fall. Herbicide with the least environmental impact will be applied by a licensed operator in accordance with state laws.
