As Michael Phelps was racing for the final gold medal of his career, the Arlington Heights Park District was hosting a competition featuring the lifeguard staff. Although the AHPD competitors did not race for gold medals, they were able to race for their community, their team, and their pride at the 2012 Lifeguard Competition.
On Saturday August 4, Lifeguards from Olympic, Recreation, Frontier, Heritage, Camelot and Pioneer were able to participate in a variety of challenges which demonstrated their skills. From equipment relays, to rescue skills, and scanning competitions the AHPD lifeguards were prepared to show off their abilities that keep the pools safe throughout the summer. This year, Recreation was the overall competition winner. The festivities did not end there as each pool was able to display team spirit. The spirit award was judged based on team décor, skit, and overall team spirit. This year Heritage was able to steal the show with their rendition of the Hunger Games. In close second came Olympic; staying true to their identity and creating an Olympic Games theme.
Overall, the Arlington Heights Park District is proud of what lifeguards are able to accomplish each season. Guards ensure the safety, fun, and enjoyable experience of all patrons.
