Park District Acknowledges Incident Resulting in Death a Tragedy

July 8, 2013 03:30 PM

With great sadness, the Arlington Heights Park District regrets to inform the community that Ms. Barbara Pagano has passed away. Ms. Pagano was injured on June 18, 2013 as she was walking along the path at Lake Arlington and was struck by a bicyclist. Ms. Pagano was taken to Northwest Community Hospital.

"This is a very tragic incident and our hearts go out to Ms. Pagano’s family and friends on their loss." said Steve Scholten, Executive Director of the Arlington Heights Park District.

Lake Arlington’s path is used for both wheeled and non-wheeled activities and the Arlington Heights Park District’s pathway usage rules have established speed limits for bikers and skaters in addition to asking that walkers receive the right of way.

The Park District’s path usage ordinances rely on the assistance of local police to enforce and for users to understand and pay attention to and heed the posted rules.

"In addition to the enforcement assistance we receive from the local authorities, Lake Arlington staff periodically patrol the path and grounds, on foot, in an effort to mitigate any potential issues during the course of the normal operating hours of the Lake. And, patrons are always encouraged to bring up any concerns to Lake Arlington staff," added Brian Meyer, Director of Recreation and Facilities.
