The Arlington Heights Park District and the Parks and Planning Department are keepers of the parks for future generations. We promote sound policies, procedures, and practices. We have an Environmental Policy and an Enviro Group task force of employees who promote our goal.
Staff across the Park District have formed an environmental team, "Enviro Group" to help promote and encourage sustainable practices as well. Their mission: "To help set a high standard of leadership and competency in the promotion and incorporation of sound environmental practices and lifestyles."
In April 2016 the group held an Electronics Recycling and collected over 1,400 pounds of electronics! In winter 2016, another successful campaign to collect usable footwear and non-perishible food items was held. Over 1,744 pairs of shoes were donated to Share Your Soles, an npo in Chicago and over 2,690 pounds of food went to local food pantries. In spring 2017, a butterfly garden was installed at Heritage Park. With the efforts of Eagle Scout Eric Duenser and Parks Department staff, over 1,000 plants of Butterfly & Swamp Milkweed, Purple & Yellow Coneflower, Tickseed Coreopsis, Marsh Blazingstar, Black Eyed Susan, Mountian Mint and grasses of Side Oats Grama and Little Bluestem were installed. More butterfly gardens are coming to a park near you! To find out how YOU can get involved, contact us at: Environmental@ahpd.org
