Prescribed Burn at Lake Arlington
Arlington Heights, IL – Integrated Lakes Management and Park District personnel began a prescribed burn of approximately 2/3 of the lake area on March 19, 2019. The additional 1/3 (towards the cape and parking lot) is planned for late 2020- early 2021. Burns usually start mid-morning as early as 10:00 AM depending on the weather conditions, and may extend into the early evening.
The Arlington Heights Park District’s Parks and Planning department manages a prescribed burn program to safely expose prairie properties to fire to protect and renew rare ecosystems. Prescribed fires are an essential tool benefiting fire-adapted plants by removing old growth, leaving open spaces and ash behind. The ash returns nutrients to the soil, to ignite new plant growth. The new growth, in turn, provides food for wildlife such as birds and pollinators, including butterflies.
Smoke from the controlled burn will be visible in the Lake Arlington area and nearby neighborhoods. Weather conditions will be monitored and burning may be postponed if burning conditions are found to be unfavorable. A gentle wind may push smoke slowly across the area. Residents are advised to keep windows closed to prevent the smell drifting indoors.
The Arlington Heights Park District will provide updates for this controlled burn via Facebook, Twitter and online at www.ahpd.org
