JULIUS FLENTIE
Julius Flentie was born in 1872. Mayor Julius Flentie served 40 years with the Fire Department, the group that "ran the town" of Arlington Heights. During those 40 years he served on other committees and boards so much that The Herald credited him with 40 years of public service to the township, village, park district, and school board. He served as the town clerk, township collector, village trustee, mayor, park commissioner, school board member, and volunteer fireman.
Julius became mayor in 1927 and had to finish the big sewer job. Insurance rates for fire were terribly high, but a water system would benefit the town and lower rates. Other accomplishments the mayor achieved were replacing gas street lights with electricity, new additions to the village hall and library, purchasing two new fire trucks, sinking three artesian wells for the city water supply, erection of a new water tower and large water mains.
He saw Arlington Heights through the Great Depression and well into World War II. By 1946 he moved to San Gabriel, California, where he lived for 15 years before passing away March 3, 1961, in Pasadena at the age of 89 years old.
