Christmas displays of the past in north school park

Lighting Up Tradition at North School Park

The Arlington Heights Park District’s annual Holiday Tree Lighting began as a way to build community and bring neighbors together through hosting the first tree lighting in 1926. In 1991, the tradition expanded with the opening of the holiday display at North School Park, which quickly became a centerpiece of the celebration. Many of the beloved displays were designed and created by former Park District employee Louis Nagy, whose artistic vision and welding skills brought whimsical charm and creativity to the event and continues to inspire the displays seen today.

Today, the event is a collaborative celebration with the Village of Arlington Heights and the Special Events Commission, featuring over 20 holiday displays and more than 100,000 sparkling lights. Held the day after Thanksgiving, this festive tradition continues to unite families and friends with seasonal music, treats and family-friendly activities, officially kicking off the holiday season in Arlington Heights.

This year, you will see new displays celebrating AHPD’s 100 year anniversary!
